La Tapatia Grocery
About This Spot
Stepping into La Tapatia Grocery on Des Moines Street feels a bit like being welcomed into a familiar neighborhood hub where the textures and colors of Mexico are tucked between aisles of vibrant produce, spices, and traditional staples. The pace here is unhurried, deliberate—the kind of place where a chat at the counter might lead to a warm recommendation or a shared story about a favorite recipe.
There’s a genuine sense of care that carries through the space. Conversations gently hum between English and Spanish, reflecting the rich heritage that gives La Tapatia its distinctive character. It’s a place where both newcomers and longtime locals feel equally at ease, whether they’re searching for that perfect chili, authentic masa for tamales, or simply a fresh elote to enjoy on the spot.
The energy is quietly vibrant, grounded in simple pleasures and human moments. Whether you’re drawn in by the aromas from the prepared foods or browsing rows of authentic ingredients and handcrafted pottery, the experience feels less like a typical supermarket visit and more like stepping into a lived-in corner of Mexico—with all its warmth and welcoming spirit intact.
La Tapatia Grocery invites a slower kind of discovery, one that rewards curiosity and a genuine desire to savor the tastes and traditions woven through each product and interaction. Here, shopping is part ritual, part connection—a subtle reminder that ingredients carry stories, and that good food brings people together.

I previously had a bad experience here, but I really want to highlight the good as well. I got an elote and Laura (I think that’s her name) was really kind! she even recommended a few other items, and I ended up grabbing more because of her. The elote was delicious and the agua de frutas tasted just like the ones in Mexico. I did come back another day for the same thing, and that time the elote tasted a bit old, almost like leftovers from the previous day. But overall, the good experiences stand out more.

Tad pricy but never crowded. Was able to get my supplies I needed for a quick small few meals. Was surprised to see they now have good sized burritos in the warmer with the tamales, excellent burritos and got full off one but I bought two. Carne asada and chorizo. Hopefully they keep the burritos around and ditch the tamales.

I'm so glad that my friend introduced me to this grocery store! It's been difficult to find good quality ingredients to remake some of my favorite Latin dishes. I'm from the East Coast where we have a very large Hispanic population so I reiterate what someone else said about the products being more expensive here, but it's better than nothing! They have a grab and go section, a made-to-order section, bakery, meat counter, produce area all fitted with everything you could need for a proper Latin American meal. Luckily, there are some employees that speak English. My Spanish-speaking skills are limited.

Everything there offers an opportunity to make authentic Mexican dishes and the pricing is awesome. They even have a small section of authentic Mexican clay pottery and dishware available for purchase.

Love this store. The cashiers all have always spoke both Spanish and English. Prices are reasonable. Way cheaper than big grocers. Even treat gringos like me nicely
